Chapter 29 Joint Operations
Chapter 29 Joint Operations
Fafnir went up to the third floor and stood in front of the spellbook shelf for a while.
He originally wanted to challenge himself with "The True Story of Spiritual Training", but after hesitating for a moment, he didn't take it.
Fafnir searched carefully and pulled out a book called "Advanced Meditation Techniques." He flipped through it briefly and found that it explained how to optimize spiritual energy consumption through meditation, which seemed quite practical.
He then took out a thick book called "Spirit Realm Elf Language"—his Spirit Realm Elf Language was only at level 1. Although he had deduced some of the meanings of Spirit Realm Elf Language through Common Elf Language, he had never studied it systematically.
Carrying two books, Fafnir went downstairs and arrived at the reception desk.
"Sister Fanning, I would like to borrow these two books." Fafnir placed the books and library card on the table.
Sister Fanning glanced at the book titles, picked up the stamp, and stamped the library card twice: "Advanced Meditation Techniques is alright for you, but Spirit Language is too early for you."
I want to give it a try.
Sister Fanning glanced at him, said nothing more, and pushed the book towards him: "Don't lose it."
Fafnir carried the books back to his dormitory. In the first-floor corridor, Martha's room door was open, and he could hear voices coming from inside.
"Fafner?" Martha heard footsteps and poked her head out. "You're back?"
"Yes, I came back last night." Fafnir walked over and stood in the doorway.
Allen sat at the table, holding a piece of paper in his hand, practicing writing in Common Language.
"Have you decided to stay here?" Fafnir asked.
Martha nodded: "We've decided to stay here for the holidays. Going back would mean doing those busy jobs and not earning any money. Here we can read some books."
Fafnir nodded, then hesitated for a moment: "What are you going to do for meals? The cafeteria is closed."
“Let’s eat at ‘Old Mud Pit’,” Allen said. “We went there yesterday at noon. It wasn’t too expensive, only two copper coins for a meal for two people.”
Fafnir thought for a moment, then took out forty copper coins from his pocket and handed them over.
"No need," Martha immediately waved her hand, "We have our own money."
"Here you go," Fafnir said, stuffing the money into Allen's hand. "This is what I earned yesterday. The port gave me forty copper coins as a service fee. It's nothing."
I know that you sent most of your labor subsidies back home this semester to pay back the six gold pounds "buyout fee".
You guys probably don't have much money in your pockets right now, and there's still a month until school starts.
"Fafner, thank you. We will pay you back later."
"I think Alan and I will go out on the streets in the next few days to see if anyone is hiring temporary servants." Martha hesitated for a moment, then took the money and said solemnly, "They are indeed very short of money right now."
Fafner returned to his dormitory and began to carefully read "Advanced Meditation Techniques".
About an hour later, there was a knock on the door.
"Good afternoon, little Fafnir!" Mr. Victor appeared at the door.
"Hello, Mr. Victor!"
"I'm sorry, I had other work yesterday and left the inspection team very early."
How was your day yesterday?
"Very good. After I finished taking inventory of the warehouse, Lord Demery even treated me to dinner at the port restaurant. The food was excellent."
Later, I went for a walk along the port dock, and then took a freight wagon back to school in the evening.
Thank you, sir, for introducing me to such a great job.
"Didn't Kingsley let you stay in the inspectors' quarters?" Mr. Victor pressed.
"I don't want to bother them."
"Haha, it's alright. Next time you can stay overnight there. Traveling by carriage so late will be tiring," Mr. Victor continued.
"Little Fafnir, there's something new happening in Port Ryan tomorrow morning. Let's go together."
It'll be a while, so you might want to bring a change of clothes or two. Oh, and remember to wear that priest's robe tomorrow.
After saying goodbye to Mr. Victor, Fafnir read for a while longer.
To avoid the crowds during mealtimes, Fafnir arrived at the "Old Mud Pit" tavern early.
There weren't many people; the dwarf behind the bar was standing idly.
"Hello, I'd like a mixed wheat bread and a bowl of pea and carrot soup. How much would that cost?" Fafnir asked.
The dwarf glanced at him: "Two copper coins."
Fafnir placed the copper coin on the bar and found a corner to sit down.
Soon, the food was brought from the kitchen to Fafnir.
He knew why Martha had said she and Alan would have a meal together.
The portion of food was quite generous, a large piece of mixed wheat bread and a big bowl of thick soup; he definitely couldn't finish it.
"Hello, could you please pack this up for me? I brought my own lunchbox."
Fafnir had originally planned to buy dinner as well, but now he didn't need to, as he brought his own lunchbox from home.
"Go back and continue studying and practicing magic. I need to go to bed early tonight; I have to go to work in Ryan Harbor tomorrow," Fafnir thought.
He was somewhat looking forward to tomorrow's operation, saying that it would last for several days and he would need to bring a change of clothes...
……
"Good morning, Fafnir, please get in the car."
The spacious four-wheeled carriage was decorated with raven feathers, just like the carriage Fafnir had ridden when he first arrived at the grammar school.
"Yesterday was Sunday, so carriages could not be borrowed. However, bishops of the church can borrow carriages for free."
Mr. Victor explained to Fafnir, "Now, we're heading to Port Ryan."
The scenery outside the carriage kept changing, and soon we arrived at our destination.
Port Ryan is completely different during the day and at night.
The sunlight shone on the surface of the Ryan River, making it sparkle.
Dozens of ships were docked at the pier, and workers were loading and unloading cargo. The shouts and the creaking of the winches mingled together, creating a noisy yet orderly scene.
“We’re not going to the inspection team today,” Mr. Victor said. “We’re going out to sea.”
"At sea?" Fafnir asked, somewhat surprised. "Mr. Victor, isn't it on the river?"
"Haha, we're going to sea, little Fafnir. Wait a moment, let me take you to broaden your horizons."
Soon, Fafnir saw Bishop Kingsley Demery, Mr. Hans, and their entourage arrive at the docks. They were all dressed in the standard robes of the Church of the God of Death, not the attire of night watchmen.
As bishop Kingsley, he naturally wore a gold raven feather pattern on his chest, while Mr. Hans and the rest of his colleagues wore silver.
"Is everyone here?" Victor asked them.
"Of course everyone's here. Besides the inspection team, I've also selected several skilled night patrol officers from the city."
Oh? Victor, you brought the little guy along too. Are you trying to broaden your student's horizons? That's a good thing.
Ha, I didn't even have that kind of opportunity back then...
"Alright, Kingsley, be serious," Mr. Victor interrupted Kingsley. "Today is a joint operation by the Church of the God of War, and we can't afford to make any mistakes."
"Buzz—" A loud whistle came from the river not far away, attracting the attention of almost everyone on the dock.
