Chapter 147 A Contingency Plan
After watching Deputy Chief Jonas leave, Evan led Hugh Deercha into the secret room protecting Zeryl.
The caretakers who were preparing to collect the bodies were asked to leave.
Then Evan put on gloves, groped Zeryl's body, and said to Hugh Deercha with a smile:
"People should not pre-set scenarios in their minds, otherwise they may become prejudiced or ignore what is in front of them."
As he spoke, Evan placed his hand in Zeril's mouth and began to feel around. It didn't take long before he smiled and pulled a tooth out of Zeril's mouth with a forceful pull.
However, Evan didn't show it to Hugh Deercha; he simply put it in his pocket, then took off the white gloves he was wearing and threw them onto Zeril's body.
At the same time, Evan released a fireball in his hand and continuously compressed it. The fireball's color changed from red to orange-red, and then deepened until it became incandescent white. Even Hugh Deercha, who was standing to the side, could feel the terrifying heat and destructive power within it, and his face changed slightly.
Evan threw the fireball at Zeril's corpse, and in an instant, Zeril's body turned to ash, leaving only a pile of white ash.
After leaving the secret room with Hugh Deercha, Evan said to the person guarding outside:
"I've destroyed the body for you. You can go in and tidy up."
The person in charge of the secret room knew that Evan had been making waves recently, so he didn't dare to raise any objections. Instead, he bowed repeatedly in gratitude.
After leaving MI9, Hugh Deercha couldn't help but say to Evan:
"MI9's secret chambers are used to detain and protect important figures, so it's impossible for them not to have corresponding surveillance measures. The fact that you took something from Zeril can't be kept secret."
Hugh Deercha didn't finish her sentence, but her meaning was clear: since you guessed that Zeril had something on him, why didn't you take some countermeasures? Why didn't you take Zeril's body away from MI9 before taking the item?
Evan chuckled and said, "Who told you I took Zeril's things to hide them from others? I'm going to tell them that I got something from Zeril, but I'm not going to show it. I have to make them wary so that tonight's operation can go smoothly."
From the moment Jonas wanted him involved in tonight's operation and began plotting against him, Evan understood that his efforts to gather those disillusioned members of MI9 had, to some extent, incurred the wrath of the masses. After all, the pie was only so big; if you took a share, others would have one less.
So Evan just subtly warned Deputy Director Jonas that it wasn't enough for the royal forces he represented to back down; he had to ensure the success of tonight's operation.
After all, MI9 is a mixed bag, with various factions, such as those closely connected to the Storm Church and those closely connected to the New Party, and so on.
Evan taking a tooth from Zeril was a way of telling Deputy Director Jonas that just because he had handed the rat over to him didn't mean he was powerless; he could destroy the rat at any time.
The conditions we discussed weren't just about you giving up suppressing these people; they also included you protecting this operation. You can't forget that.
Seeing Hugh Deercha staring at him with disgust, Evan didn't offer any further explanation, simply saying:
"In short, after this collaboration with Jonas, the royal family will stop suppressing people like you. You can live openly in the sunlight from now on. Of course, you still have to give the royal family face. You can't publicize that you are Mason Deer's daughter."
Hugh Deercha listened to Evan's words and remained silent for a long time. Although Evan did not look at her, he understood that she must be feeling a mix of emotions.
After a long while, Evan heard Hugh Deercha say to him in a choked voice:
"Thanks!"
Evan didn't seem to care at all and nodded indifferently.
Back in his office, Jonas had barely sat down and hadn't even had a sip of water when he received a hurried report from his secretary.
"After we left, Captain Evan went to check Zeril's body again, and then, after obtaining something, he burned Zeril's body."
Jonas's hand, which had picked up the water glass, froze in mid-air. After a long while, he expressionlessly put the scalding water into his mouth.
Then he gave the order:
"Inform Colonel Pal to be on high alert, cautious, and do his utmost to ensure the operation goes smoothly tonight. Also, contact the others; I need to call an impromptu meeting to emphasize the secrecy of tonight's operation."
The beautiful secretary, Miss Trish, jotted down Deputy Director Jonas's words in a small notebook and then prepared to leave to get back to work.
Just as she was about to leave, Jonas called her back and asked:
"Dream shattered?"
"Yes, incinerated. The people monitoring the secret room said that after Captain Jonas examined Zeryl's body, he conjured a fireball in his hand and instantly incinerated Zeryl's body, leaving only a pile of white ash."
Miss Trish repeated the complete information she had received, and then waited for Jonas's instructions.
"Fireball? Ash? Arsonist? Notify the royal family of Captain Evan's situation, and give them a copy of his file as well. They know what to do!"
"Yes, I understand!"
After Miss Trish left, Jonas frowned, his expression one of disbelief, and muttered to himself:
"Robert signed a contract, so it's impossible for me to reveal the details of the acting method to him. Could it really be that he figured out the acting method on his own? Is there anyone in the world who can rise to such a level so quickly?"
After leaving MI9, Evan and Hugh Deercha arrived at the Backlund Library, a dozen blocks away.
The Great Library of Backlund is a national library built with special funds allocated by the former king. After its completion, it surpassed the Great Library of Roselle in Intis to become the largest library in the Northern Continent, with a collection of millions of books. It is a symbol of the Kingdom of Loen becoming the most powerful kingdom in the Northern Continent, and at the same time, it is a sign of the beginning of the decline of Intis.
In order to broaden public awareness, the Backlund Library did not set high barriers to entry; anyone with a library card could freely enter and exit, and the library card cost £5 a year.
So when Evan and Hugh Deercha arrived at the library, there were many people coming and going.
Evan, familiar with the place, led Hugh Deercha around the library and soon found Ian Wright, who was wearing a tattered hat and had unusually red eyes, and watched him from a distance.
"Is the operation to capture Detective Zeryl over?"
At some point, Fors, wearing a dress, appeared beside them and casually asked, looking at Evan and her best friend.
Seeing that Evan didn't intend to speak, Hugh Deercha informed Fors of Zeril's arrest. Since Evan hadn't specifically mentioned it, Hugh Deercha also briefly recounted what Zeril had confessed, leaving Fors speechless.
What Zeril revealed was beyond the imagination of outsiders. Whether it was replicating a city and letting agents live and study in it to make them more adaptable to the environment of the country they were infiltrating, or using the flaws in the electoral system to carry out a huge plan of substitution, it was all chilling.
Moreover, she experienced the cruelty of intelligence work for the first time, and she was also shocked to learn about some of the functions of a level 0 sealed artifact.
At the same time, this information kept stimulating Fors's inspiration, making him want to go back and create right now, believing that it would definitely be a big hit.
Unfortunately, Evan saw through Fors's thoughts and coldly reminded her:
"You can keep this information to yourselves, but don't leak it anymore. Don't forget that MI9 is a military intelligence agency, and any mistakes will be dealt with by military law."
Upon hearing this, Fors felt a cold wind blow down his neck and nodded repeatedly to indicate that he understood.
After a while, Evan told Fors that the task of keeping an eye on Ian Wright was over and that they could leave first.
Just as Fors was about to leave with Hugh Deercha, she suddenly remembered something and asked:
"Miss Audrey and Viscount Grelint went to great lengths to help Hugh get out of prison. They want Hugh and me to introduce them to the relevant Extraordinary gatherings. Will it have any impact if we help or not?"
Evan chuckled inwardly, then said it wouldn't have any impact and that they could lend them a hand.
Evan had been observing Ian Wright until Ian Wright found another document he had hidden, at which point he revealed himself and walked towards him.
Ian Wright noticed someone approaching him, suppressed his earlier delighted smile, and immediately used the book he had been holding to cover the documents he had just received, pretending to be reading them intently.
But to Ian Wright's surprise, the handsome gentleman walking towards him casually remarked as he passed by:
"The General History of the Northern Continent? That's rare! Most people who come to this library are looking for a skill to make a living, so they borrow professional books like accounting."
Or it could be students or similar groups who need to investigate information that is difficult to find.
In short, they're all people living in the present, and few of them pay attention to the past. How can you enjoy reading history books that many people consider incredibly boring? Can I possibly know why?
Ian Wright eyed the suddenly appearing gentleman warily, hesitated for a moment, and then said:
"Actually, I just like stories about famous people in history, and as Emperor Roselle said, only by studying the past can we see the future."
"Oh? You like Emperor Roselle, huh? Well, Emperor Roselle once said, 'He who steals a hook is punished, he who steals a kingdom becomes king.' What you have in your arms won't make you king, so give it back to me."
